What is Pruning? Why is it important?

Posted By Ervin in Gardening

Most plants advantage from some type of regular pruning and maintenance. The trick is in understanding when to prune what. A superb many flowering and fruiting plants choose to be pruned while they’re dormant, in late winter through early spring. Some, like spring blooming trees and shrubs, will begin setting new buds as soon as the old buds have fallen. These will want to be pruned shortly after flowering, or you danger pruning off the new buds with the old.

And still, other plants want to be constantly pruned and deadheaded, to keep vigorous and in flower.

It’s complicated but not often fatal. Pruning at the wrong time of year can also result in fewer flowers and fruits, however, it normally won’t damage the plant ultimately. The exception to this is pruning too late in the season and inspiring a variety of tender, new growth so that it will be killed back with the onset of winter climate. That will help you take the guesswork out of pruning here is a series of articles to help you study when to prune the plants in your garden.

Flowering bushes, Shrubs, and Vines

Possibly the most complicated group of plants, when it comes to pruning times, is flowering trees and shrubs. A normal rule of thumb is to prune summer season and fall flowering shrubs and trees in the dormant season (late winter / early spring) and to prune spring flowering shrubs and trees soon after their flowers fade.

The confusion comes with plants like hydrangeas, roses, and clematis; some of these flower in spring, some in summer season or fall, some flower repeatedly. Here are some guidelines for identifying when your specific variety is great pruned.

Pruning tools

Whatever plants you have got, the first aspect you need to remember is the great tool for the task. Sharp, clean tools not only make the job of pruning plants simpler, they’re important to keep your plants healthy. The four basic tools required for pruning most plants are hand pruners, shearers, loppers, and saws. Here’s a breakdown of which pruning tools are suitable for your pruning tasks.

Evergreens

Gardeners don’t regularly consider pruning evergreen trees, which might be a great thing. Evergreen trees don’t need to be pruned. It isn’t recommended which you use pruning to keep an evergreen tree’s size in check. You’ll just stress and distort the tree by doing that. better to choose a smaller, dwarf evergreen than trying to size down a large tree. However, there are times when you need an evergreen in your landscape to be a piece fuller and that can be completed with some well-timed pruning. Keep in mind, the larger the tree, the more labor-intensive this kind of pruning can be, so do this while the tree is young.

Fruit trees and Berry plants

Most fruiting plants need to be pruned even as they’re dormant. You commonly get one risk to set buds for next season’s crop, so specific care is thinking about fruit trees and berry flowers. Most flowering plants grown for their ornamental value will still provide you with some kind of show, even if you’ve been lax about everyday pruning. Fruit trees and berries will gradually decline except they’re pruned and tended. There are so many reasons for this, such as suckers that direct energy far from fruiting branches, older branches susceptibility to sicknesses and pests and the habit of many fruiting plants to only produce on branches of a certain age. So in case you are growing tree fruits or berries to harvest, pruning them must be given high priority.

Perennial Bedding plants

Maybe the most labor-intensive plants to prune are the non-woody perennials. The notion that you may plant perennials once and then have a renovation-free garden for all time is a wrong belief.

Most perennial plants, particularly the flowering ones, not only need to be cut back totally at some point before or after the growing season, they need regular pruning, shearing or deadheading. Which plants to prune while and how much to prune them is something you study as you bought experience gardening. It’s part of the pleasure of gardening for most gardeners and it’s the kind of knowledge that varies from area to area. When and how to prune perennial plants probably makes up more lawn chat than any other topic. The articles here will optimistically get you talking.

Great post! I know many people who attempt to do this on their own and it is a very dangerous idea. Thanks for spreading the word about the dangers.

Such a great post. It really allows people to know and understand that they should be getting roof snow removal done by a professional and not by themselves. It can actually be very dangerous going up on your roof in the winter, slipping is not ideal!

I appreciate you did a fantastic job your blog is very well written and informative. The article would be helpful for me and others who are a bit conscious of privacy. Arborvitae shrubs would be a reliable choice for privacy seeker it can grow 1 foot per year and usually reaches 12-14 feet.

It really can help to take the article's advice and start your search by asking whether or not the contractor can provide the services you need. After all, depending on the kind of landscaping that your business has, you will need different kinds of services. For example, if your company has a lot of bushes on your property, you'll want to make sure that the landscaping service can keep them trimmed for you.

These garden edging ideas are interesting. There is some good inspiration here for our front yard, which we're in the process of edging. I'm not set on any one design yet, although I'm considering either wooden or stone edging of some sort. I've been looking at some other articles about landscaping bordering on the cheap: Carve Your Creation has some good additional ideas as well, although I think glass pebbles look tacky for the most part. I will be contacting you guys shortly; I'm hoping you can answer a few questions. Thanks a lot.

Having synthetic is the easiest thing you can do to keep a lawn beautiful all the time.

Hi Lynn, Thanks for the appreciation you can give us a call for more information.

Thanks for these great landscaping ideas. I'm going to try to take inspiration from many of these examples. Our front yard needs some stone features and lighting elements among other things. I was looking at some articles for inexpensive front yard inspiration — the one on CYC (https://carveyourcreation.com/diy-front-yard-landscaping-ideas-on-a-budget) mentions similar things to this, but they mention non-string lighting as well. In this regard, do you think solar is generally better to go with as opposed to electrical? I'm going to be giving you guys a call shortly. Thanks.

The landscaping idea that everyone can study from is to always make your garden one which can look great anytime of the entire year. This is tricky because in the center of winter a lot of things do not look so hot. That is why it is so important to find out about the varieties of plant life and trees and shrubs that will still bring beauty to your house in the depth or winter and in the summertime heat.

My husband and I recently moved into a home with a yard in desperate need of landscaping, and we're looking to hire your service to help us with this.

I really like some of the questions that you encourage your readers to ask the landscape contractor when they're choosing them. It's particularly that one of the questions is about how they will reduce water waste. After all, you want to make sure that you are using your water as efficiently as possible when you are taking care of your lawn.

I like that you talked about choosing a company that keeps their machine is safe conditions. My wife and I have been looking for someone to install a new front yard at our house. It would be smart to find someone that keep machines working well because they would be able to finish the job in a shorter amount of time.

Andrea Myers

It's great that you elaborated on how it is dangerous to remove ice from the roof from your own because there's a higher chance that you'll slip or fall. My husband tried to this last winter, and he nearly falls from our roof. I'll advise him to consider hiring snow removal service next winter to ensure his safety.

Margaret

Thanks for these great front yard landscaping tips. I would have liked to see more in the way of images, but that's alright. We do want to make our front yard look nice and we'll be sure to keep these tips in mind.
